Program of 2026 "The Great Miracle"
The miracle of birth is one of the world's great mysteries; so it's probably a happ coincidence that in Salzburg, the "Rome of the North", two 'mystery' plays enjoy great popularity. In the summer, staged on Cathedral Square, "Everyman" deals with the mystery of death. In winter the "Advent Singing", held in the Festival Hall, portrays the mysterious miracle of birth - the universal symbol of hope and optimism.
This year's anniversary production brings my 27 years as artistic director of the Salzburg Advent Singing to a close. I feel infinitely grateful and inspired to have been able to serve this unique cultural experience. The anniversary Advent Singing event reflects the essence of things I have particularly learned to treasure down the years.
Traditions upheld across the decades once again play a central role in the story of Mary, Joseph and the nativity. As always, the show portrays shepherds performing familiar songs and tunes. My efforts to explore new aspects of this story repeatedly piqued my curiosity regarding the diversity of the world's religions, and the search for the 'great mystery' inherent in us all. Special attention is now to be given to the miracle of this divine spark.
In addition to folk music, the performance includes the musical gems of four composers whose influence on the Salzburg Advent Singing over the decades has been significant. The new scenic oratorio aims to create a heartfelt and thought-provoking Advent singing performance that blends in harmoniously with the many previous productions - and one truly worthy of this anniversary.
