Early life
Christopher Plummer was born on 13 December 1929 in Toronto, Canada. Shortly after his birth, his parents divorced and Plummer grew up with his mother in Quebec. During school, he already began studying to be a concert pianist but also discovered a passion for theatre and enjoyed acting more. Plummer received his first stage role at the age of 18.
Career
During the 1950s, Plummer acted on theatre stages, in road shows, on Broadway, and on television productions. He appeared in many Shakespeare productions and was nominated for his first Tony as Best Actor in a Play in 1955. The 1960s brought along more work on the stage and TV as well as more award nominations. By 1962, Plummer had played Macbeth, Hamlet, Mercutio, Richard III, Cyrano de Bergerac, Mark Antony, Henry V, and many more.
Plummer was cast as Baron Georg von Trapp alongside Julie Andrews' Maria for the 1963 success The Sound of Music, after director Robert Wise had seen one of his impressive performances on Broadway. For this performance, Christopher Plummer remains widely known. However, Plummer did not remember the movie fondly and even declined to attend the 40th Anniversary cast reunion.
Christopher Plummer continued his work as an actor tirelessly over the next five decades until his death, appearing in countless stage productions and movies in various genres. Over his career, Plummer received several nominations and awards, including Academy Awards, Emmys, Grammys, and Tonys.
Personal Life
Christopher Plummer married three times and had one daughter from his first marriage. At the age of 91, Christopher Plummer passed away on 5 February 2021 as the result of a fall.
