Perner-Insel / Perner Island

Salzburg Festival

The Perner Island is named after the builder of the Salzach riverbank protection, Christoph Perner from Rif, who died in 1568. For a long time the island in the Salzach served as a recreational area for salt refinery officers. In 1989 the Old Salt Rafinery was closed and at the initiative of various creative artists the former Sudhalle was rebuilt into a theater in 1992. Since then it is used as a culture and event venue by the Salzburg Festival. The hall is especially suitable for experimental theatre and concerts of contemporary music.
